What am I going to wear! That’s the ultimate question that every woman young or old asks when they have a function to attend. Since it’s the wedding season again everywhere around Male’ (and the entire country) restless women are barraging tailors with designs, fabrics and sequins. This year, I’ve come to notice that, most women preferred longer hemlines, and you must have seen (if you were in Male’ of course) ladies walking into Nasandhura or Dharubaruge in high heels wearing flowy gowns in minimalistic silhouettes. I quite admire the way Maldivians follow trends, sometimes it’s in a good direction, other times…well let’s not get there for once And It’s not only in Male’ that the gowns flourished with popularity, but elsewhere in Paris and New York; gowns were the preferred silhouette presented by many top designers.

Burberry Prorsum

Pre-fall 2012 collections were a mix of shades ranging from ochres, bright pinks and electric blues to the cooler shades of browns, greys and solid blacks. Simple yet sophisticated gowns were seen in the pre-fall 2012 collections by Burberry Prorsum, Jason Wu and Carlos Miele. The shades used Burberry’s collection seem perfect for a wedding, there was no black but dark evening tones and of course no white which is a ‘no-no’ for weddings (most Maldivians have traditional bride-in-white receptions).

For the ladies who prefer to wear a short dress, DKNY’s  pre-fall ’12 collection had some youthful flower printed dresses that look fun and flirty as well.

However, before we get excited about the delectable draped dresses, one of the important things which lie in the basics of clothing are most of the time shrugged off.  My dear ladies, it’s about our undergarments. While most of us believe that gowns could hide many flaws, they also tend to cling to tricky areas like our tummy, thighs and buttocks, now wouldn’t it be dreadful to find out that the male guests at the wedding were chuckling about your panty line which was ever so visible the whole evening!                                           So a nipped waist line and smooth and shapely thighs would look great for figure hugging gowns, and for that you don’t need to hit the gym everyday and drink only water the week before the reception; instead waist-nipping and thigh slimming tights like spandex are ideal quick-fix-and-go clothing. And not to mention, a good brassier is a must-check as well! Ladies, beautiful clothes are definitely a must-have but so are undergarments that fit perfectly; age old tips can never die out eh

Aloha! The title for this post clearly outlines what I’m about to write and you might go all ‘here we go again’ as ‘arm party’ posts could be considered archaic by now, in fashion terms…but I just couldn’t resist myself! Aren’t we all obsessed about the sparkly colorful stack up?As for myself… I’m totally loving the eclectic mix of bracelets, friendship bands and vintage watches. There’s so much fun to stacking up one’s arm with every little wrist ornament found in the jewelry box. Arm party is still sported by many women around the fashion capitals of the world. The term ‘arm party’ was coined by one of the coolest bloggers in the world Leandra Medine from Man Repeller! Kudos ! As the nocturnal being I’ve turned into in the past couple of days, made me once again indulge in painting more fashion illustrations. This time in water colors is a  model sporting a generous number of bracelets and god-knows-what else.Hope you enjoyed this one!

Its 4 am on a Friday morning and I just completed an illustration. My sleep deprivation sometimes gets the best (or the worst) out of me. Lately, I’ve had this small obsession with Stella McCartney’s Fall/Winter 2011 black number. This dress with it’s delicately placed polka dots on sheer black fabric achieves the ‘girly-ness’ and neatly nails the trend of prints and different patterns that have been dominating this year. My fingers itched to take up a paper and pencil and start immediately sketching a fashion illustration based on this lovely dress. I must add, the dyed hair is still so appealing, perhaps that’s why I’ve painted the model’s hair in rainbow tones.

Hello everyone! I have finally shot some pictures of the most recent jewelry I’ve made, and am very excited to show them to you all! As a a designer and a student of design,  I’m constantly learning and exploring concepts old & new and experimenting with different material to create something distinct. So, whenever I make jewelry I try to make it as unique as possible… at least to me it should be different from what’s already available in the market. I mean think about it…Who doesn’t want to stand out! Each one of us is unique with a unique personality so clothing and jewelry is one way of showing one’s own personality …and it’s honestly horrifying sometimes to see the lady standing next to you wearing the same dress or piece of jewelry that I’m wearing.

To begin with, this neck piece is made with a mix of materials such as wood, leather and metal. You can wear it with a casual black, white or beige jersey top, I’ve worn it with a black cardigan here. The gold-bronze door hinge is an element that perhaps most stands out in this design. Contemporary jewelry challenges the ideals of the classics, employing materials that are not traditionally meant for jewelry but when used… it is perfect as bread and butter! I have to say this contemporary design I’ve made here is very apt to wear with your LBD (little black dress) or even to work, wear it over your simple crisp white shirt

I have been meaning to work with feather jewelry for a long time and a very good friend of mine pushed my ‘meaning to work with’ into ‘making one for real’ ! By the time I finished making this single feather earring I was completely at awe with the results. The black feathers here, has a beautiful sheen that imitates the shine of black ravens, stunning  I have to say! With an elegant black rhombus bead and silver chain this single earring is modern and elegant at the same time. Wear it with any simple top you like and you pull off funky and elegant in one go…how often does that happen yeah?!

It’s been quite a while since I posted any handmade jewelry and I’m excited to show all the latest ones I have created. To kick off the recent collection here’s a classic piece I made, it’s vintage gold chain and gold buttons paired with black ribbon, chain and beads. The ribbon and vintage jewelry combo is still dominant as a trend and this compelled me to make one.

That black bow tie gives this girlish look to the piece doesn’t it? One could wear it casually with a cropped tee or to work in a crispy white long sleeved shirt! The styles you can pair up with this piece of bijoux is just endless. The contrasting materials of fabric and metal actually emphasize on the piece’s unique quality, the fact that something strong could easily go along with something soft and vulnerable is a very romantic concept to me.

I’m wearing a turban, tied in such a way that is reminiscent of the late 80′s, with a light beige over sized t-shirt  and trippy purple dyed boot legged jeans! And I’m loving my new leather belted wedges which is a  recent member to my shoe collection! The necklace can be paired with endless styles! Ah! So good to be back to blogging after a loooong absence (put the three extra o’s to emphasize my M.I.A from Famushu) It feels like a century since I blogged and feels even more terrible to know that I have missed the SS2012 fashion weeks as well! Pardon me, dear Famushu readers but I have been involved with the demanding work of preparing for my exhibition. Currently, am breathing hot air from my nostrils and whizzing up and down from one location to another directing and making sure all things fall in place for my fashion video…Yes, you read it right…It’s a fashion video I’m making for my exhibition. And I’ll just leave you guys there; keep you guessing what it could be about conceptually.

The recent SS12 fashion weeks of New York, Paris and Milan was lip smacking sensational, like those fizzy sparkly tongue tantalizing candies! Mmmm mmm! Although, the internet is flooded with pictures and reports of the catwalk couture, I’ll highlight some of the trends and individual designers that caught my inner designer eye (imagining how that eye would look right now hmm…)! The deep ocean and its oceanic life were a concurrent inspiration and theme behind the brands Chanel, Peter Pilotto and Alexander Mcqueen to name a few. Even though I live on an island (that is just 1 meter above sea level with the ocean surrounding us 360 degrees) I never get bored or tired of hearing how fascinating the underwater life is or how beautiful the blue tone spectrum gradually changes from shallow to deep! So I got naturally excited to know that this spring the runway shows took inspiration from the deep sea!

To fire off, the Chanel show seemed like a translucent oceanic dream. The head designer and creative director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld still seems twenty-something at heart, as he so passionately executes his opulent shows with genuine creativity pinched with the reality of wear-ability that clients actually look for. Karl’s way of playing with textiles and exploring his concepts is youthful and refreshing and for this year’s spring show he experimented with fabrics “even he didn’t know how to define. They brought an iridescent mother-of-pearl shimmer to the collection—the lightness literally shone through.” Style.com

I swear the hair on my arm stood up with goose bumps as I looked through Alexander Mcqueen’s SS12 collection, the dresses were absolutely beautiful, poetic yet out of the world – almost alien-ish. It seemed to me like Sarah Burton created her own army of beauty goddesses from the deep sea – a sixth kind perhaps! The microscopic attention to detail that the designer had given with beads and cut offs lace trimmings and folds, had perhaps raised the bar of couture to yet another level. “She based her collection on the three Gs: Grès for the pleating and draping, Gaudí for the architecture, and Gaia for the sense of all-encompassing oceanic life that infused the clothes, like the outfits composed of coral or shells. Or the incredible engineered matelassé jacquard in a barnacle pattern. Or the silk chiffon in an oyster print, which had been layered, cut into circles, and ribbed (though that hardly even begins to explain the complexity of the result).” Style.com Sarah Burton has rightfully earned her position in the house infusing a bit of femme’s touché into the creative-bizarre DNA of McQueen.

Versace’s show had its models strutting down a luminescent runway in crisp white sophisticated outfits with sea horses, star fish and shells studded in gold. Donatella described her collection as “The meeting of old and new Versace” The mix of Donatella’s signature design touch and Gianni’s classic elements were refreshing ( I hate to repeat the same adjective but honestly no other word comes to my currently frozen brain to describe the collection which seemed as ‘refreshing’ as sea breeze on a sunny day with icy sugary popsicles in one hand overlooking surfers smoothly cruising the waves)

The cropped jackets in Versace and Chanel were a personal favourite, reminds me the 90’s with Helena Christenson and Christy Turlington modeling for Vogue Italia editorials. The bejeweled jackets cropped at the waist put the ‘F’ to female form. Versace’s SS12 cropped jacket with cropped sleeves was youthful & modern, summery and gave a chic luxurious look – by which I’m sure the first to bag them would be the Beverly Hills young & beautiful, who would wear it to exclusive chic socialite parties.

Bright geometry added that extra ethnic zing to the fashion weeks. It was like traditional geometric designs presented in a futuristic and modern way! I loved how Burberry put it forward! The clutches and the bags were exotic with the geometric lines running around and the organic colored beads just seemed perfect. Sass and Bide’s tribal beading paired with neon colors of yellow and orange and prints with polka dots had my blood pumping again as the mix of different elements did not seem out of place, in fact it seemed to harmonize well and I could clearly see a ultramodern wearable quality in their collection!

Matt Satin as a fabric clearly was dominant as a textile among designers this season. Haider Ackerman, I believe, delivered a very artistic touch using the material. The matt thickness of satin paired with see through chiffon and the roughly tied fabrics trailing along seemed not only poetic but very modern as well. I’ve to abruptly stop here, and sprinkle some vanishing dust on myself as I have to rush to continue with my projects yet again! I hope to shower Famushu with more updates on Fashion very soon! Rio Rio Rio! The first thing we think about when we say Rio is the Rio Carnival; the colors the feathers the glitter, intricate masks, grand floats and the beautiful carnival dancers! Oh! and let us not forget that Brazil always leaves a sunny image in our minds, with the waves breaking onto a sandy beach drenched under a warm yellow sun and the women in skimpy bikinis strolling about…sigh. Perhaps that is why the swimwear edition of Rio Fashion week is most anticipated, non? Rio Fashion weeks are in fact always different, the colours are brighter the models, curvier and there’s a general ring to all the collections that seem to collectively cheer “Brazil La La La Laa Braazil!” Alas, I have never posted swim wear on FAMUSHU before and this will be the first of it’s kind (and psst… I know it’s a bit late to talk about swimwear fashion week, pardon me this time ). Swimwear has come a really long way from the early Greek times and its twisted and turned to take many forms design-wise,  that I’m preetty sure the alphabet for different design concepts and styles have run out! Alors, one Brazillian designer in particular blew me away with the sophistication she plays with her swimwear: Lenny Niemeyer. This talented designer who started off as a landscape architect is today, the most sought after luxury swimwear designer. Lenny’s recent 2012 collection just blew me away, it was sensuous, oozing sophistication and  ‘luxury’ was clearly emboldened. I love the way she played with the colors and design, it was cheerful and reminded of the sea and the Brazilian rain forest.   The haute couture cuts appeared flawless as it played to synchronize with the prints on the fabrics. Plush swimwear quotes :  “The use of new technology also stood out, particularly with the incorporation of the laser-cutting technique (e.g. precision-placed slits within the feathered patterns), as well as the textured snakeskin in some suits”. Take a look at the outfits closer, there is detail – not too much, just enough to keep the customer wanting more. Imitating glass spikes and spines, the jewelry for the show was unique and played a huge part in maintaining the concept.                                                         Further on, there was a reasonable array of options to choose from,bikini’s, one piece swimsuits, skirts, shirts, maxi’s and more. Don’t we all have certain accessories which we are so obsessed about that it becomes a daily part of our lives… almost impossible to separate from our human bodies?! I’ve decided to post some accessories here which I wear almost every time I go out.

* The chocolate brown fedora hat is perfect for a sunny afternoon in the tropical Maldives -which was around $14

*My leather shoulder flap bag, is not only comfortable but also matches with almost every outfit and is a parfait day bag – costing a reasonable $ 14 as well.

*The silver cuff bangles ( around $10) I purchased from Northern India is an exquisite piece of work and donning one of the bangles is a simple way to accessorize a cool cotton shirt.

*Embellishing the fingers is still a big trend and whilst the trend evolves the rings just seem to be get bigger and funkier. My personal favourite is my silver and turquoise stone ring which cost around $3

*The spike ear studs I got from Malaysia are just pure elegance with a twist! And last but not the least the pilot sunglasses – can’t leave my house without ‘em!
