I truely agree with Ahmed...I think we should do more with this whole issue of climate change & environmental problems with a far greater priorty than what's happening now...
If we honestly look at what's happening in our country, we can say we (maldivians) are one of the worst environment violators on earth. While most maldivian know that they have both obligation & self-interest in facing head-on the serious issue of global warming & national security threat faced by environmental problems...we still cut down trees from shelter belts around Islands, we still take sand from beach to built houses, we still destroy reef habitat by over catching reef fishes (in this process many corals are ensnared in webs of Nylon fishing lines & this is damages the reef at much higher rate than anything)...& when tidel waves damage our Islands we blame global warming... so before we say "SAVE US TO SAVE U" we should do something to SAVE OURSELVES...

Our country is one of the greatest victims of global warming. Yet we keep contributing to the problem as well. The public transport system in Male', the centre of the problem in Maldives, can be classes as no existent . If my sources are correct there are an odd 500+ cars that are used as taxis, catering for an area of 579.8 hectares. Also, the electricity usage is increasing year on year, adding to the pollutants that are being released in to the atmosphere and contributing to global warming. To curb this, alternative energy sources could be adopted. Solar Panels are one of the more obvious choices for "The Sunny Side of Life". They maybe expensive and at first glance "not worth it". But if we do not want the prophesies many, that our country is about to become a modern day Atlantis to come true, we should be willing to make a little sacrifice. Also, alternative energy source are more ecomonical than we think. They do not require that much in terms of maintainance costs and they would eliminate or significantly reduce the electricity bills. There have also been cases in the UK, where house owners sell excess electicity produced by their Solar electricity systems to the national grid.
